"This not an anti-cop book" - Angie Thomas Influences and references in |
Trayvon Martin & Rachel Jeantel Angie Thomas says of Jeantel, "I remember being so angry at how people characterized her just because they didn't think she presented herself the way they would have presented themselves."
With Starr, "I wanted to say, Here's a black girl who is saying things the way you think that she should say them, but are you listening?" |

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is a complicated book because it depicts of how brutal the police can be. It frustrates readers because of how injustice prevails most of the time. This is what is wrong with the world today. There are too many authorities committing crimes and somehow, their position gives them immunity to the crimes they commit. And it angers many people, including myself, because there is not much we can do. Power is a dangerous thing when it is given to the wrong people and it is a shame that those who have power are the ones who abuse it.
